A curriculum vitae or "CV" is often used interchangeably with the term "resume" to describe
a "brief written account of one's past history (education, employment) typically used when
applying for a job," as per the Oxford dictionary.
But it is also a very specific form of a resume in itself. A curriculum vitae is more formally,
a detailed, lengthy and structured listing of education, publications, projects, awards and work
history.
One of it's distinguishing characteristics is its length. For example, a curriculum vitae for a
mid-career candidate may be as long as twenty pages. Rather than a resume, a CV is required for
certain positions such as educators and scientists.
This format is ideal for job seekers with extensive academic and professional credentials
applying for positions in education or research. It is best to check with others in the field
to see whether a CV or a resume is expected.
The format for a CV is as follows:
- Education
- Publications
- Projects
- Awards
- Employment history
